How to finish the neckline with bias tape

The Simple Shirt is a collarless shirt. The neckline has a clean finish using bias tape. The tape must be cut on a bias grainline to give the elasticity you need to be able to finish a curve. This technique is very useful and can be used on any opening for example an armhole, a neckline or a curved hem.

STEP 1: With right sides facing, pin the bias tape along the neckline. Begin, by connecting the centre of the bias tape with the notch at centre back, and then continue left and right. The bias tape is a little shorter than the full measurement of the neckline.

STEP 2: Sew the bias tape along the neckline with 1 cm seam allowance. Begin, at the very edge of the front edge so the placket top is closed.

STEP 3: From the right side, press the seam open with an iron. The seam allowance is pressed away from the body. Sew, an optional understitching, 1-2 mm from the edge.

STEP 4: Snip into the seam allowance with a pointy scissors if you need more flexibility. You can also reduce on side of the seam allowance to get less bulk.

STEP 5: Turn your work around and carefully press the neckline edge. Fold the bias tape around the seam allowance og close with an edgestitching 1-2 mm from the edge. Sew from the inside - over the entire stretch of the neckline.
